It’s about the items that have been used until they are nearly worn out, but the homemaker held on to them, as it wasn’t easy to buy a replacement.

Paint finishes are worn and muted with a stain finish. The home usually has simple antiques that are primitive in nature. Lighting has a simple, unique design, and often is made of tin or iron. Fabrics are woven or quilted, and blend well with the antiques in the room.

Or they may have had a cabinetmaker build what they needed after their arrival. Furniture would have been sparse. They would not have had much decor (ie: clutter in today's world). And the decor, would have needed to be useful as well.
