HISTORY OF THIS PRINT:
The burning of the White House by the British, is perhaps the most noted event of the War of 1812.
Although the burning occurred long after George Washington had died,
President Madison’s wife, Dolley Madison, rescued George’s portrait from the White House just before the building went up in flames.
The portrait was 8 feet tall, and bolted to the wall of the White House dining room, making it extremely difficult to grab and run, while flames were increasing.
The painting that Dolley saved, known as Gilbert Stuart’s Lansdowne Portrait, is one of the most iconic representations of President Washington, known today.
