Early records, record the use of bird bottles...................A Virginia Gazette shoppe advertisement in 1752, listed "Martin-pots", which is another name for bird bottles, amongst it's assortment of goods offered for sale. And in 1746, Williamsburg tavern keeper, John Burdett listed in his inventory, 16 bird bottles, as he knew that Martins and other small birds found the bottles to be a perfect nesting place........and since their diets consist of flying insects like mosquitoes, his shoppe customers found them quite useful. Our bird bottles, hand crafted in Williamsburg VA, have a transparent glaze over the reddish clay, which makes the bird bottle waterproof and provides a bit of insulation for your feathered friends. We recommend taking the bird bottle down, and cleaning it, while storing it during the winter months, then set it back out to invite new occupants for spring nesting.
