Mob caps were plain caps, worn over the hair, most generally made of cotton. This one is of a coarse cotton homespun fabric. Caps protected hair from daily dirt, maybe from the smoke of the fireplace, dust from wagon travel or even the grease flying from cooking. Caps also covered unwashed hair, as it was not thought to be healthy to wash hair regularly, as we do today. Often, mob caps were also worn under bonnets and other hats.
